  • Mark and Sheila reported on the field trip in North Carolina associated with International Carnivorous Plant Society (ICPS) conference. Unfortunately, several of the sites they visited were poached in the two weeks since Mark had been there last.
  • Mark took some participants to a property in Boiling Spring Lakes, North Carolina where the property owner is amenable to receiving help in maintaining the plants on his property. Mark will draw up the standard contracts with NASC.
  • We discussed asking nurseries to establish a line item for each plant sold (or other ideas, such as identifying individual items that will support the cause) that will donate funds to the NASC's conservation program. We will need to create a brochure to lay out the plan, a section of the website dedicated to the program, and start asking different sellers.

Meeting ended at approximately 10:39 PM

9th Biennial International Carnivorous Plant Society Conference

The NASC was recently assembled at the 9th biennial International Carnivorous Plant Society (ICPS) conference held at the Johnson and Wales University Inn at Seekonk, Massachusetts from August 11 to 13. Many of the Board members were on hand to staff our booth in the main hall where the show and sale occurred. We answered questions and explained our mission to dozens of visitors to the show, including many people who were learning about carnivorous plants for the first time! In addition to the awesome time we had at the table, our president Emily Troiano, who also happens to be the vice president of the New England Carnivorous Plant Society and the co-organizer of the 2012 ICPS conference, found time to prepare and give a presentation on the NASC's mission, objectives, accomplishments, and current projects. Call us humble, but we think she did an amazing job and the question session after her presentation turned into something more like a roundtable discussion on conservation.

The NASC Board and members, from left to right: David Schloat (advisory), Emily Troiano (president), Victor Holland (administrator of plant materials), Ryan Kitko (vice president), Matt Kaelin (member-at-large), Mark Todd (head of conservation), Sheila Stewart (treasurer), and Zuzana Srostlik (member).

  • Mark spoke with TNC Alabama; identified a potential site for reintroduction of the S. leucophylla close to the site in Florida that we would like to collect and rescue plants from future development.
  • Mark also reported on a new site he visited in North Carolina that had unique plants. He'd like us to consider putting some funds or efforts toward helping the landowner maintain the plants on the property.
  • Mark also brought up the possibility of establishing a head grower's position in Europe. We discussed the difficulties and benefits of doing so. We will continue to discuss this.
  • Shane shared the first draft of the Newsletter with the Board. Looks great!
  • Emily is putting together the presentation for our ICPS conference presentation.
  • We discussed what to bring for the NASC table at the ICPS conference: t-shirts, our NASC brochure produced by Shane, the latest newsletter printed out, and some plants that Ryan will bring.
  • Mark, Sheila, and Yann (from Belgium) will be meeting with our potential site rescue landowner tomorrow! Good luck, folks!
